JOINT PROSTHESES FOR WRIST OR FINGER JOINTS – HIGH-QUALITY REPLACEMENT
Hand joint prostheses are a stroke of luck for anyone who suffers from severe osteoarthritis in the wrist or has to live with the consequences of an accident. This is because the mobility of the joint can be preserved with a hand joint prosthesis. In hand surgery at the ETHIANUM, damaged joints can be replaced with high-quality joint prostheses. This means that everyday movements with the hand are no longer a torture.
In principle, every finger joint and the entire wrist can be replaced with an artificial joint. In some cases, however, a stiffening of the joint is also an option. The prerequisite for any joint replacement is the functionality of the ligaments and tendons that will later surround the prosthetic hand joint.
Mobility is of great importance in the basic joints of the fingers. This is where a finger joint prosthesis comes into its own. The same applies to the middle joints of the fingers. Here too, a finger joint prosthesis is advantageous for further mobility. The situation is different for the end joints. These are more characterised by stability. Stiffening is therefore the method of choice for damaged or painful finger end joints.
For pain-free mobility of the entire wrist, a joint prosthesis with a joint socket and a joint head can be considered. These are able to completely replace the wrist with its many joint bones as well as the ulna and radius. As a rule, these replacement joints last between five and 10 years.
At the ETHIANUM, you are literally in the best hands with the hand surgery experts for all aspects of a joint prosthesis. After an anamnesis with X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging, our hand surgery experts will discuss the appropriate options for a prosthesis with you.

Arthritis of the thumb saddle joint – conservative treatment options
Unfortunately, osteoarthritis of the hand is irreparable. Non-surgical treatment is the first treatment option. This involves immobilising the thumb saddle joint. Anti-inflammatory drugs alleviate discomfort, as do occupational therapy and physiotherapy. These measures alleviate the symptoms but do not combat the cause of rhizarthrosis. If these measures do not bring any noticeable success, surgery for thumb saddle joint arthrosis is often the treatment of choice.
Resection arthroplasty – the operation
The most promising surgical treatment for rhizarthrosis is the removal of the large polygonal bone. The removal of the large polygonal bone creates a gap between the first metacarpal bone and the scaphoid bone. During the natural recovery process, this gap is filled with scar tissue. This creates an artificial joint that allows the thumb to move with significantly reduced pain or even completely pain-free. The bones can no longer rub against each other in osteoarthritis of the thumb and the pain trigger has disappeared. This surgical method is called resection-suspension arthroplasty (RSA) or resection arthroplasty. This wrist surgery procedure takes about an hour. After the procedure, the thumb is immobilised in a removable plastic splint for 5 weeks, allowing the fingers to move freely.
