INTERNAL MEDICINE – ENDOSCOPIC EXAMINATIONS FOR YOUR HEALTH

The Department of Internal Medicine at the ETHIANUM offers you the entire range of endoscopic diagnostics. These services include, in particular, medical examinations of the esophagus and gastrointestinal tract. Internal Medicine also offers specific examinations for the early detection of stomach or bowel cancer.

The private practice of Prof. Dr. Helmut Seitz at the ETHIANUM Clinic also offers treatments for liver diseases. The use of the so-called Fibroscan plays an important role here. This method, which Prof. Dr. Seitz was the first to introduce in Germany in 2006, makes it possible to precisely measure liver stiffness and make a clear diagnosis. In addition, Prof. Dr. Seitz has dedicated almost his entire life to a specific topic: the investigation and research of diseases caused by alcohol consumption. In this field, the specialist in endoscopic examinations has acquired a unique reputation worldwide.

Internal Medicine at the ETHIANUM works closely with our experts in cardiology and radiology. In addition, Prof. Dr. Seitz has a highly professional medical network that has grown over decades and can carry out further specific examinations if required.

The Department of Internal Medicine is a real stroke of luck for our clinic. This is because we can offer you the full range of services in the important areas of gastroenterological diagnosis. And thanks to the use of the Fibroscan, biopsies are generally no longer necessary, as was previously the case.

Read how the Fibroscan method works and find out what a clever, experienced, skilled and human-oriented doctor awaits you here.

FIBROSCAN – THE MEASUREMENT OF LIVER STIFFNESS

The Fibroscan method is based on determining the speed at which a sound wave propagates in the liver. The faster, the stiffer or harder the liver is. The method is called transient elastography and is a sonographic procedure.

How does the method work?
Doctors call the hardening of the liver liver cirrhosis. This means that there is a lot of connective tissue in the liver, making it very hard. This stiffness or hardening of the liver can be measured in pressure (k Pascal).

The Fibroscan allows an accurate measurement of this hardening of the liver. A liver that is <6 kPa is considered healthy. Liver cirrhosis is present at a value of <13 kPa. The Fibroscan introduced in Germany by Prof. Dr. Seitz allows reliable statements to be made about precisely this measured value.

Accordingly, the Fibroscan is particularly suitable for the early detection of liver damage. The Fibroscan can be used to obtain precise data, particularly in the case of diseases that could indicate alcohol abuse. In this way, the doctor can provide precise information as to whether a fatty liver caused by alcohol or otherwise is present.

Fibroscan can now also be used for diseases such as diabetes. People with obesity and metabolic syndrome also benefit from the Fibroscan.

And the best thing about the method is that the examination takes just five minutes!
