PRESERVING BREAST SENSITIVITY – THE LATEST METHODS FROM THE EXPERTS
Despite significant advances in breast-conserving surgery, the breast tissue has to be completely removed in around 30% of women with cancer. Modern methods of breast reconstruction using the body’s own tissue allow the shape and size to be restored. However, erotic sensitivity is usually completely lost.
This is certainly one of the advantages of breast reconstruction with autologous tissue. This is because it offers affected women the opportunity to regain the sensitivity of their breasts. Thanks to a microsurgical technique, erotic sensitivity can be significantly improved after breast reconstruction with autologous tissue. The American breast surgeon Aldona Spiegel, head of the breast centre in Houston/Texas, was able to demonstrate a significant improvement in breast sensitivity after breast reconstruction in her studies.
In this surgical procedure, which only a few centres worldwide perform, the body’s own tissue used for breast reconstruction is dissected and transplanted with the sensitive nerves. These nerves are connected to recipient nerves in the breast area under a microscope. These nerve fibres thus restore breast sensitivity and take the body’s own reconstruction procedures to a new, previously unknown level.
