Robot-assisted knee prosthesis Heidelberg: Precision from our knee experts

Customized knee endoprosthetics for maximum function: from joint-preserving partial replacement (sled prosthesis) to total prosthesis (knee TEP).

When advanced knee osteoarthritis limits your quality of life, artificial joint replacement is often the key to new mobility and a pain-free, active life. At our Center for Hip and Knee Endoprosthetics at Ethianum Heidelberg, we make no compromises in order to achieve the best possible result for you. With the state-of-the-art CORI® robotic system, we are redefining precision, safety, and individuality in knee surgery.

Our path to your perfect knee: precision in every step

The CORI® system is not an autonomous robot, but an intelligent, surgeon-guided instrument that complements our surgical experience with sub-millimeter precision. The entire process is designed to make the operation as individual and gentle as possible for you.

1. 3D modeling without CT scan (smart mapping): Your advantage—no radiation exposure
One of the greatest advances of the CORI® system is that it completely eliminates the need for preoperative computed tomography (CT). Instead, at the beginning of the operation, we use a special pointer to record the unique anatomy and ligament tension of your knee joint. The system uses this information to create a highly detailed, three-dimensional model in real time. This not only saves you an additional appointment, but above all the associated radiation exposure.

2. Digital and individualized surgical planning: Tailored to your anatomy
Based on this precise 3D model, we plan the surgery digitally on screen. We can tailor the optimal size, alignment, and position of the prosthesis components precisely to your personal anatomy. The stability of your ligaments and the natural joint function in motion are also simulated to ensure a harmonious and stable movement pattern.

3. Robot-assisted implementation: Maximum precision and protection
During the implementation, we guide the hand-held robotic milling instrument. The system acts as a digital guide and ensures that the previously created, individual plan is implemented with the highest precision. A virtual protective barrier (haptic limitation) ensures that the instrument stops before healthy bone or important soft tissue can be damaged. This means that only the diseased bone is removed and your healthy tissue is preserved as much as possible. The experienced surgeon remains in complete control at all times.

Your advantages at a glance: Why we rely on CORI®

• Highest precision: For optimal positioning, better function, and long durability of your new joint.
• Maximum individuality: The operation is tailored precisely to your unique anatomy and ligament stability.
• No CT radiation: A modern 3D model is only created during the operation – without prior radiation exposure.
• Preservation of healthy tissue: Millimeter-precise work protects healthy bone, ligaments, and soft tissue.
• Potentially faster recovery: The gentle procedure supports faster and less painful rehabilitation.
• Double expert guarantee: The technology is used by two highly specialized surgeons, Prof. Holstein and PD Dr. Michel.

Who is this method ideal for?
Robot-assisted surgery is suitable for all patients who need a knee replacement. Depending on the extent of osteoarthritis, this may be a partial joint replacement, in which only the diseased part of the joint is replaced (known as a unicondylar sliding prosthesis), or a complete joint replacement (a bicondylar total prosthesis or knee TEP). The system really comes into its own when implanting a joint-preserving sliding prosthesis, as sub-millimeter precision is crucial here in order to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible and achieve a perfect fit. The method is ideal for all patients who value highly precise, individualized, and particularly gentle treatment.

Your path to a better quality of life at Ethianum
We understand that surgery is an important decision. That is why your journey with us begins with a detailed, personal consultation.

1. Initial personal consultation (60 min): We take an hour to examine you thoroughly, review the findings you have brought with you, and answer all your questions.

2. Precise diagnostics: If further clarification is necessary, this can be done directly at our clinic – from digital X-rays to our high-resolution 3-Tesla MRI.

3. AI-supported axis measurement: For precise planning, we use LAMA® AI software, which calculates all relevant parameters of your joint geometry precisely from a full-leg X-ray. This allows us to identify any misalignment in detail.

4. Digital surgical planning: Based on this detailed data, we plan the optimal size and position of your prosthesis. This allows us to proceed with a customized plan that is accurate to the millimeter.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the robot-assisted CORI® system

Does the robot replace the surgeon?

No, at no point. The CORI® system is a high-precision tool that is operated exclusively by us as experienced surgeons. It supports us in implementing the digital plan. The surgeon retains complete control and responsibility at all times.

What is the biggest advantage of the robot-assisted method?

The combination of maximum precision, individual planning, and the preservation of healthy tissue. Another decisive advantage is that no radiation-exposing computed tomography (CT) is necessary before the operation.

Who is this method suitable for?

For patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis who require partial (sled prosthesis) or total joint replacement (knee TEP) and want a particularly gentle and precise operation.

How long does the surgery take?

The operation time is comparable to that of a conventional procedure. Digital planning and robotic assistance allow the procedure to be performed very efficiently.

When can I get up again after the operation?

Our goal is to get you moving quickly. With the support of our physical therapists, you can usually take your first steps on the day of the surgery or the following day.

Will my health insurance cover the costs of robot-assisted surgery?

As a private practice, the costs for surgery with the CORI® system are usually covered in full by private health insurance companies and subsidy agencies. Patients with statutory health insurance have the option of paying for the treatment themselves. We will be happy to provide you with a transparent cost estimate and advise you individually.
