AGE SPOTS REMOVAL – TREATMENT OF PIGMENTATION DISORDERS
The term “age spot” is a popular term for various pigmentation disorders of the skin. The manifestations of hyperpigmentation are diverse and the causes vary. The good news is that most age-related pigmentation disorders are harmless. However, pigmentation disorders can make the skin look uneven and therefore be perceived as unattractive. However, before treatment or removal of age spots can begin, an exact diagnosis is essential. This is because another possible cause of the pigmentation disorder must first be ruled out. This is because pigmentation disorders can also be skin cancer or a precancerous condition. There may also be other diseases whose symptoms are age spots.
Please note: In such cases, laser treatment of age spots is not only useless, but even dangerous. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can also occur with all methods of removing age spots. This risk must be carefully weighed up in each individual case so that the right method of treatment can be found.
These are all decisive arguments for placing the removal of age spots only in the hands of experienced specialists. At the ETHIANUM Clinic, trained and experienced dermatologists take care of the treatment of pigment spots. Their expertise guarantees a professional diagnosis and a promising treatment that meets your wishes. Bleaching, peeling or lasering the affected areas can help to remove pigmentation disorders. THE MOST COMMON PIGMENT DISORDERS
Melasma / Chloasma
Grey-brown, irregular patches on the cheeks, nose, forehead, chin and upper lip. Women of phototypes IV to VY are predominantly affected. Causes include exposure to UV light, genetic predisposition, hormonal changes following pregnancy, use of contraceptives (pill), thyroid dysfunction, cosmetics or phototoxic substances (e.g. perfume oils).
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
This pigmentation disorder is not limited to the face. It can occur anywhere on the body. The darker the skin type, the more susceptible it is to developing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The pigmentation disorder occurs particularly frequently after acne vulgaris, eczema, trauma, psoriasis, nodular lichen, drug exanthema and other inflammatory skin changes.
Lentigo senilis (“age spot”)
The classic age spots are caused by long-term exposure to the sun. This leads to a pigment disorder of the epidermis, which is why these age spots usually appear in the second half of life. The harmless brown spots are mainly visible on the face, the backs of the hands and the décolleté.

TREATING PIGMENT DISORDERS – THE METHODS
Which method is the right one for removing your pigmentation disorder depends largely on how deep the pigmented cells occur in the skin.
We generally use these methods at the ETHIANUM:
- BLEACHING PREPARATIONS
Bleaching preparations can be used for superficial pigmentation disorders. There are various agents such as hydroquinone, azelaic acid, kojic acid, various retinoids and niacinamides and many more. They all have a lightening effect on the skin surface. - CHEMICAL PEELING
In a chemical peel, substances such as fruit acids or trichloracid are applied to the skin. The skin reacts to the acid and sheds the top layers of skin. The skin peels. After a certain time, the acid is neutralised to stop the process. The skin then renews itself. - RUVY TOUCH LASER TONING
Ruvy Touch Laser Toning is an optimal laser treatment for removing pigmentation spots. The 660nm wavelength is particularly safe for the treatment of age and sun spots. In addition, the use of Ruvy Touch Laser Toning reduces the risk of side effects such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation to an absolute minimum. - PIGMENT-SELECTIVE AND ABLATIVE LASERS
The pigment-selective and ablative laser enables a precisely defined depth. This destroys the pigment disorder by ablation. - FRACTIONAL PHOTOTHERMOLYSIS
With fractional photothermolysis, microscopically small zones of the skin area to be treated receive controlled thermal damage at the previously defined depth. The dehydrated cornea remains undamaged and simultaneously acts as a natural plaster. The treatment leads to desquamation and renewal of the skin.
