ALL ABOUT THE BREAST – AESTHETIC SURGERY ALL ABOUT THE BREAST
Benign enlargement of the male mammary glands is medically referred to as gynaecomastia. Excessive glandular and/or fatty tissue develops in one or both of the man’s breasts. This results in a ‘feminisation’ of the male breast. In combination with the excess fat in the breast, this results in an oversized breast volume. Hormonal influences, illnesses or the intake of certain medications are usually the cause of this development of the male breast.
If you feel uncomfortable in your skin as a man, breast reduction and mammary gland correction surgery may be an option. The operation provides lasting results that can positively influence and strengthen your self-image. More than 10,000 men undergo breast reduction surgery for gynaecomastia every year. Male breast reduction is a plastic surgery procedure. This involves reducing the size of the male breasts, flattening the breast profile and correcting the overall breast contours. The size and position of the areolas can also be surgically optimised during the operation. The results are usually permanent.
Please note: If the breast reduction was caused by taking medication, steroids or weight gain medication, you should no longer take these in the future. You should also endeavour to maintain a stable weight. Our doctors often recommend a hormonal and urological examination to rule out any pathological causes of gynaecomastia.
We will briefly explain how male breast reduction surgery works.

REDUCTION OF THE MAMMARY GLANDS IN MEN – THE SURGICAL OPTIONS
If the gynaecomastia is caused by fatty tissue, liposuction may be sufficient to correct it. A cannula is used to loosen the excess fatty tissue, which is then suctioned out. There are different liposuction methods. Your doctor at the ETHIANUM will discuss with you which one promises the best results for you.
If glandular tissue and skin need to be removed, excision techniques are recommended. Excision is always indicated if the areola needs to be reduced in size and/or the wart needs to be repositioned to achieve a more masculine shape. Here too, there are different techniques that the plastic surgeon will adapt to the specific situation and discuss with you beforehand. In male breast reduction surgery, both procedures can be combined to optimise the contours.
Following breast reduction surgery, the incisions are treated with bandages. A compression garment is recommended to minimise swelling and support the new breast contour during healing. A small, thin tube is placed temporarily to allow wound fluid to drain away.
You will be given precise instructions on aftercare. This includes the care of the incisions after the procedure and medication to be taken orally or applied. The incision and general state of health must also be monitored. The procedure is performed under anaesthesia. The possible anaesthesia methods are intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia. On average, the operation takes one to two hours.
