EYELID CORRECTION AND EYELID LIFT – FOR AN OPEN LOOK
Eyelid correction, also known as blepharoplasty, is always recommended if you have the impression that your face looks tired and worn out. Possible causes are often bags under the eyes, drooping eyelids and wrinkles around the eye area. An eyelid correction or eyelid lift procedure can help here. The contours become clearer, the eyes appear more alert and the gaze more open. And these factors can make a significant contribution to making your face look younger and more vital.
An eyelid lift or eyelid correction can be performed on the upper, lower or both eyelids.
In addition to the aesthetic factor, reasons for an eyelid correction may include the following:
- loose, sagging skin that affects the natural contour of the upper eyelid
- A drooping eyelid that sometimes even restricts vision
- Excess fat pads that make the eye area look puffy
- Bags under the eyes
- Sagging lower eyelids, making the white under the lens of the eye visible again
- Excess skin and wrinkles on the lower eyelid that are perceived as disturbing
Unfortunately, there are conditions that can rule out eyelid correction surgery. These are
- Eye diseases such as glaucoma, dry eyes or retinal detachment
- Cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure
- diabetes
If you are interested in eyelid correction or lifting and suffer from one of the above-mentioned conditions, please be sure to inform the aesthetic surgeon during your consultation. Under these conditions, the surgeon can find the best treatment method so that you have a very good chance of achieving the desired result. We have summarised in compact form how an eyelid lift is performed surgically and what you should consider beforehand.

EYELID CORRECTION – PROCEDURE OF THE OPERATION
Every eyelid correction begins with a detailed anamnesis and consultation, which is conducted confidentially with the aesthetic surgeon. During this consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss all your concerns, wishes and requirements with the surgeon. It is important that you tell the doctor openly about any medical conditions you may have. Whether you have certain allergies or are taking medication, vitamins or herbal supplements. The specialist in aesthetic surgery will then focus on your wishes and discuss the best possible method and procedure with you. Of course, you will also be informed about possible risks. If you subsequently decide in favour of an eyelid lift, the operation date will be arranged with you.
Lifting the upper eyelids usually takes 35 to 60 minutes. Eyelid correction of the lower eyelids takes approx. 60 to 90 minutes.
- Anaesthesia
The anaesthetist will discuss the most suitable anaesthetic method with you in advance. The upper eyelids can almost always be operated on under a local anaesthetic. In addition, you can either be sedated intravenously or receive a general anaesthetic. - The surgical incision
Sagging upper eyelids can be corrected by making incisions in the natural eyelid crease. Fat pads are then repositioned, muscles and tissue are tightened and excess skin is removed.
In the case of sagging skin on the lower eyelids, the incision is made directly under the eyelashes. If there are mainly bags under the eyes without significant sagging of the skin, a hidden incision, the so-called transconjunctival approach, can be chosen. Excess fat is then selectively removed or redistributed. Depending on the findings, the lower eye ring muscle is tightened and the edge of the eyelid is fixed. At the ETHIANUM, all incisions for eyelid correction are generally made in such a way that they remain concealed in the natural structures of the eyelids as much as possible. If it is necessary to fill the cheekbone area as part of the eyelid correction, this can be carried out with fillers or autologous fat during the same procedure. - Skin closure
The skin incision is closed with hair-thin stitches. These can be removed after five or seven days. For optimal healing, the suture is additionally secured with skin glue or skin adhesive strips. - Directly after the operation
The eye area is then loosely protected with gauze. In addition, cooling compresses and ointments ensure that any swelling and haematomas subside quickly and prevent irritation of the eyes due to dryness. - The result
After the eyelid lift, it is advisable to carefully protect the eyes and the skin around them from the sun. We recommend wearing sunglasses with dark-coloured, sufficiently large lenses until healing is complete. As healing progresses, your smoothed eye area will become increasingly visible until you can enjoy it permanently.
