RHINOPLASTY – HARMONIOUS APPEARANCE AND BETTER BREATHING

Providing you with the best possible advice and medical care is our highest duty. Every planned rhinoplasty therefore begins with a detailed consultation. The specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery will take plenty of time to consider your wishes and requirements. Regardless of whether you are considering rhinoplasty for aesthetic or medical reasons, it is important for the surgeon to know what your expectations are and whether they are realistic. You will also be informed in detail about possible risks and complications during this consultation. To ensure the best possible result, your face will also be measured during this consultation. Only from this can the rhinoplasty experts make a clear surgical recommendation. It is also important to find out whether other corrective facial procedures have already been carried out and whether you have any allergies or are taking certain medications.

If you decide in favour of a rhinoplasty after the non-binding consultation, a surgery date will be arranged with you.

RHINOPLASTY – PROCEDURE OF AN OPERATION

  1. Anaesthesia
The anaesthetist will discuss the most suitable method of anaesthesia with you in advance. Intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia may be used for rhinoplasty.
  2. The correction procedure
You can expect the operation to take between one and 2.5 hours on average. Rhinoplasty is performed in an “open” or “closed” procedure. In a closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are concealed inside the nose. In an open rhinoplasty, the incision is made along the bridge of the nose. The soft tissue covering the nose is carefully lifted. This creates access for reshaping the nose. During the correction, individual parts of the nose can be reduced or enlarged using instruments specially developed for this purpose. Occasionally, it may be necessary to transplant cartilage and bone from other areas of the body. Your surgeon will inform you about this in advance. To straighten a sloping nasal septum, protrusions inside the nose are reduced. This helps to improve breathing or reduce snoring and sleep apnoea.
  3. Skin closure
As soon as the nasal structure has the desired shape or correction, the nasal skin and tissue are adjusted accordingly and the incisions are closed. At the ETHIANUM, we avoid the use of tamponades wherever possible in order to spare you pain.
  4. Result and healing process after the operation
During the first week after rhinoplasty, soft tubes or ointment gauze support the nose from the inside. Initial swelling will also subside within a few weeks. However, it can take up to a year for the new nasal contour to fully develop. Until then, the appearance of the nose will gradually change to its permanent shape. Occasionally, swelling may occur again during this period, which will subside.
  5. Recovery phase
You may have to wear a custom-made plastic splint for two to three weeks after the operation. This protects and supports your newly shaped nose. Your surgeon will of course give you precise instructions for your aftercare.

RHINOPLASTY – WHAT IT CAN ACHIEVE AND IMPROVE

A nose correction, medically known as rhinoplasty, can have various reasons. On the one hand, optical factors can lead clients to consider reducing or harmonising their nose. An operation can create a more harmonious overall appearance. However, there are also medical reasons for having a nose job. In this case, the function of the nose is often impaired. This includes, in particular, a restriction of the respiratory function as well as problems with breathing at night and snoring.

At the ETHIANUM, we perform rhinoplasty for both aesthetic and medical reasons. Through rhinoplasty, our plastic and aesthetic surgery specialists can significantly improve the following functions as well as the appearance of the nose:

  • equalise the size of the nose in relation to the face
  • equalisation of the width of the bridge of the nose
  • Correction of humps and depressions in the nasal profile
  • The position of the tip of the nose
  • Correction of bulbous or snub noses
  • Correction of the nostrils and nostrils
  • Straightening of crooked noses (also skewing of the nasal septum)
  • Reduction of snoring, sleep apnoea and general susceptibility to infection

In principle, a nose correction is always possible if your face is no longer growing and you are healthy. Find out in compact form how our specialists perform rhinoplasty, what methods are available and what you should bear in mind.
