THE MOST COMMON SPORTS INJURIES IN GOLF – AN OVERVIEW

Most sports injuries in golf have a common denominator. There is often an overload on the body’s musculoskeletal system. In many cases, incorrect posture, a suboptimal swing technique or insufficiently strengthened back muscles are the causes of golf injuries. The most common injuries in golf include problems with the shoulders, elbows or spine. However, knees or ankle joints can also be affected by golf. We have summarised the most common sports injuries in golf for you here. Read about the conservative methods that can be used to treat many sports injuries and when surgery is necessary.

COMMON GOLF INJURIES

Here you can read about the typical injuries that golf can cause and the treatment options we offer:

Golfer’s shoulder

Golfer’s shoulder is usually the result of overuse due to repetitive, repetitive movements. These may irritate the tendon plate and overload the acromioclavicular joints and shoulder muscles. This can lead to painful bursitis under the acromion and the biceps tendon.

Treatment of golfer’s shoulder can initially be attempted purely with medication. In addition, local infiltrations can be used in combination with physiotherapy measures. If these therapies do not alleviate the symptoms of golfer’s shoulder, arthroscopy of the shoulder may be a conceivable alternative.

Golfer’s elbow or golfer’s elbow

Both golfer’s elbow and golfer’s elbow refer to inflammation at the tendon insertions. These are inflammation-like reactions of the tendons or tendon skin caused by overloading. In orthopaedics, there is a difference between golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow, which can also be triggered by golfing. Oral drug therapies and infiltrations can be considered as conservative treatment methods. Treatments using special physiotherapies and autologous blood are also promising.

Golfer’s wrist and golfer’s fracture

In a golfer’s wrist or golfer’s fracture, the ulnar flexor tendon tears at a bony prominence. This often happens during overly passionate training. The overload leads to painful tendonitis in the wrist. This can only be treated individually. However, if chronic conditions develop, surgery can be helpful.

Pain and discomfort in the spine

Our lumbar spine is not designed for rotation. Accordingly, golf can often cause pain and discomfort in the spine. It is therefore important to specifically strengthen your back and build up your muscles if you are passionate about golf. Targeted abdominal and back training, as well as swimming, help to prevent back pain from playing golf. We carry out a medical examination to determine whether your pain is due to a muscular deficit or whether there are structural, degenerative changes in the spine. Based on this, we recommend either medical training therapy or other technique-variant measures. Local infiltrations, acupuncture or other physiotherapeutic measures can help to alleviate the pain. Degenerative changes to the spine are treated by our spinal surgery specialists.
