Patient-friendly precision without CT radiation

[October 2025] The CORI system from Smith & Nephew is revolutionizing the planning and performance of knee surgery. The key advantage for patients is that the system works entirely without prior computed tomography (CT). Instead, during the procedure, the surgeon creates a precise 3D model of the individual bone anatomy using image-free, intelligent mapping . The position of the prosthesis is then planned exactly on this basis.
The robot acts as an intelligent support for the surgeon. It assists in performing precise bone resections and ensures with the highest accuracy that the procedure goes exactly according to plan. The experienced surgeon retains full control over the hand-guided instrument at all times. The result is a procedure that is not only accurate to the millimeter, but also reduces radiation exposure for the patient.
Ideal for joint-preserving unicondylar surface replacement
The system proves its superiority particularly in the implantation of partial prostheses, known as unicondylar surface replacement (also known as sled prostheses). In this joint-preserving procedure, only the damaged part of the knee joint is replaced. The success and longevity of such a prosthesis depend largely on perfect positioning. The robot-assisted technology of the CORI system guarantees maximum accuracy, which is difficult to achieve with manual techniques. This results in a natural feeling of movement and potentially faster recovery.
Concentrated expertise and initial successes
With Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Philipp A. Michel, the Center for Hip and Knee Endoprosthetics has gained a proven specialist who, together with Prof. Dr. med. Jörg Holstein, is further expanding surgical excellence at Ethianum. The first operations with the new robotic system have already been successfully performed and confirm the enormous potential of the technology.
“Robot-assisted surgery is the future of endoprosthetics. It allows us to perfectly adapt the prosthesis to the individual anatomy of the patient,” explains PD Dr. Michel. “We are proud to be able to offer our patients at Ethianum this technology for safe and gentle treatment.”
With this investment, the Ethianum Clinic is consolidating its reputation as a leading center for individualized joint surgery in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and once again focusing on maximum patient benefit.
