ETHIANUM FINANCES SPECTACULAR TREE-PLANTING CAMPAIGN

[April 2023]

The beautiful old trees in the garden of the ETHIANUM Clinic on Voßstraße in Bergheim had to make way for the construction of a new laboratory building for the new tumor research facility being built there. A total of eight large trees now provide shade elsewhere in the city: four maple trees were moved to Igbal-Ufer some time ago, and now a 25-year-old magnolia and three oaks are greening Gadamerplatz in Bahnstadt.

This is a very time-consuming process for the old trees, as the trees have to be dug out very carefully while protecting the roots and packed with the soil in a close-meshed net. Special equipment is used to carefully lift the large-volume load, which weighs several tons, and transport it to the new location. The responsible landscape and forestry office of the city of Heidelberg has now gained some experience with the relocation of old trees.

The ETHIANUM Clinic is bearing the costs for this complex work. Prof. Dr. Günter Germann, Medical Director and Managing Director of the ETHIANUM (in the middle of our picture of the symbolic planting ceremony, on the right Heidelberg’s Lord Mayor Prof. Dr. Eckart Würzner): ‘I am delighted that the trees will live on and can now be seen in the public domain’.
