FURTHER SUPPORT FOR DOCTORS IN UKRAINE
[December 2023]
The ETHIANUM Hospital Heidelberg is continuing its commitment to supporting the war-torn Ukraine with another campaign: Following the delivery of surgical material (see news from March 3, 2022), a two-day workshop for the further training of doctors from Ukraine has now taken place under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Günter Germann, Medical Director of the ETHIANUM, which focused on the rapid wound care and reconstruction of body parts in war-wounded patients.
The ‘Flap Course’, as the special surgical technique is called, was held in the rooms of the Anatomy Institute of the Heidelberg University Hospital, whose director Prof. Dr. Thomas Kuner and the head of the dissection department, Dr. Sara Doll, were also involved.
A total of eight experienced surgeons as instructors from Germany and the USA hosted 15 doctors from Ukraine.
In addition to the initiators Prof. Scott Levin (5th from right) and Prof. Dr. Germann (4th from right), Prof. Dr. Holger Engel (4th from left), plastic and aesthetic surgeon at the ETHIANUM and a proven specialist in the field of ‘flap plastic surgery’, also took part. With this surgical technique, which also involves moving larger main areas with reconnection to the blood supply, wounds can be treated very reliably, quickly and sustainably.
