SPINAL SURGERY AT THE ETHIANUM CELEBRATES 1000TH OPERATION WITH COMPUTER-ASSISTED NAVIGATION PROCEDURES
[July 2023]
The spinal surgeons at the ETHIANUM were very early adopters of computer-assisted surgery and are among the pioneers in Germany in this field. The use of so-called spinal navigation procedures enables very precise placement of screws, plates and other implants during spinal surgery.
Together with the use of complex nerve monitoring systems, the risk of spinal cord injury or other complications can be drastically reduced.
Priv.-Doz. Dr. Berk Orakcioglu is already preparing for the next step in technological progress: “We will skip the stage of robot-assisted surgery and will very soon be working with augmented reality techniques, in which the preoperative CT data can even be projected into the surgeon’s surgical goggles in order to achieve even greater safety during spinal cord surgery or implant placement,” says Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Berk Orakcioglu, who works on these technologies at the ETHIANUM.
